If you’re a homebrewer who is looking for some inspiration, you just might find it in the form of unique ingredients. Of course adding interesting ingredients to a beer is nothing new, but sometimes it’s the least likely combinations that lead to the best results. Take for example Short’s Bloody Beer; admittedly this isn’t the most appealing name for a beer, but in this case, a beer that contains “Roma tomato puree, horseradish, black peppercorns, dill, and celery seed” is a thing of beauty.
You don’t have to get that crazy with your own brew, but taking a bit of inspiration from those who are paving the way for unique flavors is always a great step to take. That’s why in today’s blog, the team at US Beer Crates is going to take a look at some of the more interesting beers out there. Who knows? You just might find the inspiration you need to make your masterpiece.
Our Favorite Unique Beers
Whether it’s a refreshing double IPA, a smooth chocolate stout, or an easy-to-drink lager, thinking outside the box can help to provide a beer that’s unique, but drinkable at the same time. Here are a few of our favorites:
Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale
Everybody loves a good donut (or in this case a good doughnut). Combining some of that flavor with maple syrup and bacon in conjunction with an ale? Well...that’s a pretty unique thing to do. Reviews for this beer are a mixed bag, but we applaud the effort that went into this one. It’s not necessarily a beer you’d reach for every single time, but as an experiment, we are on board with the creativity on display here.
Twisted Pine Ghost Face Killah
If you’re the type of person who loves feeling like your mouth has been inhabited by a boiling pot of hot lava, this beer might just be perfect for you. Its ingredients include a number of different spices, topped off with ghost pepper. As the Twisted Pine website notes, it is “utter agony for most, but absolute euphoria for a fiery few.” You can add us to the list of those who are experiencing agony, but we appreciate the dedication to doing something different nonetheless.
Catawba Brewing Peanut Butter Jelly Time
There was a period of time a few years back when people seemed to be really into the idea of a peanut butter and jelly beer. No one got it right quite like Catawba Brewing did. All too often, there’s a seriousness about beer, but it’s refreshing to see a childhood favorite recreated in the form of a good beer. Once again, you might not want this one all the time, but when you do, it’s just about as good as it gets.
